  • Are you a Medical Coder?
Occasionally, someone asks this question – why would a Nurse want to be a Medical Coder? Obtaining the AHIMA credentials of CCS (Clinical Coding Specialist) and CCS-P (Clinical Coding Specialist – Professional) has given me the knowledge to better understand healthcare provider billing. Coding knowledge along with clinical nursing experience affords me the opportunity to understand the provider’s billing requirements and needs along with providing accurate reimbursement. The certifications have given me the opportunity to improve reimbursement accuracy for physicians and healthcare professionals – often, reimbursing an entire "Episode of Care", which reduces rework and multiple reviews for payment of the specific healthcare event. Also, correcting one billing or payment issue will often result in correcting the same issue across multiple providers. This allows for adjudication of several claims and avoids further delays in payment to providers. For instance, noting that a provider was underpaid for inpatient services, a review of ICD-10-PCS services proved that the system was programmed incorrectly to accept the inpatient procedure codes. Correcting the system resulted in correct reimbursement for several providers of several $$$.$$ 😀
