AHIMA delays CEU policy change updates

Based on members feedback, AHIMA has delayed their 40% CEU policy changes until January 1, 2025. This is a delay only ~ the rule is still valid.
AHIMA “delays” policy changes for Recertification of Certifications – delayed only

AHIMA delays CEU policy change updates ....

members' feedback does matter and will make a difference long-term.

Policy delayed -- not removed

AHIMA (via CCHIIM) made changes to their 40% CEU policy for recertification of AHIMA credentials sometime during 2023 to be effective for recertification periods starting January 1, 2024. See article with complete and valid details as well as, AHIMA’s website.

Based on the response from AHIMA members and industry stakeholders, AHIMA and CCHIIM have decided to “delay the implementation date until no earlier than January 1, 2025 to allow ample time to understand the changes and plan accordingly.”

Note >>>> AHIMA delays the 40% CEU policy change updates .... This is a delay only ~~ not a removal. The policy still is valid.

The email sent December 14, 2023 from AHIMA Chrisann Lemery, Chair of Commission on Certification for Health Informatics and Information Management (CCHIIM), states the following.

“The Commission on Certification for Health Informatics and Information Management (CCHIIM), in collaboration with AHIMA, wants to address your concerns and share an essential update regarding the recertification changes communicated in October. CCHIIM voted to defer the implementation of the 40 percent AHIMA continuing education unit (CEU) requirement until no earlier than January 1, 2025.”

Where’s the Value?

Yes, AHIMA, a delay in the policy implementation is a positive step to “including your members in this policy change” -- - a policy change that the members were not consulted with and were not notified of the change via professional means. But there is more.

Yes, AHIMA, I agree that obtaining CEUs directly from AHIMA has value. As you state, the policy change is made to “better anticipate and influence current and future workforce development”. I understand this to mean that you, AHIMA, will be providing “relevant” and “succinct” content to meet this objective. If AHIMA is going to be a leader in the future of Health Information, then it is imperative that AHIMA provide content relevant to the individual’s area of work and career development.

AHIMA further writes, “The decision to update recertification requirements stems from a decade-long absence of comprehensive review and an opportunity to align with other associations.”

Why, why a decade of absence in providing leadership to maintain the AHIMA credentials? One might ask, “Who’s really in charge?”

AHIMA -- - You have work to do !!!!

No, not CCHIIM

🛠️ The members see you >>>> AHIMA. We get directives, leadership and credentials from you.

🛠️ Failure to include YOUR MEMBERS in this strategic CEU policy change is a major error -- - you goofed this one and it will take mountains to undo the damage.

🛠️ Failure to NOTIFY your members of the CEU policy change is also a major error.

These decisions from AHIMA leave one feeling distant, and without value for AHIMA. A feeling that AHIMA only “wants the money.”

We will be “watching” and “talking” and “taking action.”
