AHIMA updates the CHDA Exam
AHIMA has updated the Certified Health Data Analyst (CHDA) exam, and exam Content Outline. The update will capture the existing environment for healthcare and technology, and ensure that the CHDA reflects the current state of practice for a Data Analyst.
The Beta Period:
Quoting from AHIMA CHDA website --- the Beta Period for the new CHDA exam: (links below)
“The Beta period for the CHDA exam will start on February 1, 2024. Beta exam results will only be provided following the examination review and determination of the passing standard. The time between the end of the examination administration period and the release of scores to candidates will be up to ten weeks. Please do not contact AHIMA or Pearson VUE during this time. All Beta candidates will receive an email notification when their results are ready.”
New and Updated CHDA Domains:
“The 2024 exam content outline effective on 02/01/2024 competencies fall into six domains.
Certified Health Data Analyst (CHDA®) Previous Exam Content Outline Effective through 01/31/2024.
Certified Health Data Analyst (CHDA®) 2024 Exam Content Outline Effective 02/01/2024.”
In Summary >>> What’s New:
The CHDA exam Content Outline starting February 1, 2024, will contain six (6) domains.
A new domain is added >>> “Foundational Knowledge of Analytics in Healthcare.” This domain is now Domain #1 and covers (14-16%) of the CHDA exam.
The other domain subject areas remain however, are renumbered.
The percentage of exam questions per domain is restructured.
For example, the percentage of questions in the Business Needs Assessment domain was previously at (19-23%) of the exam; the new exam will cover this domain at (11-15%).
CHDA Domains and percentage of test material:
Domain 1 – Foundational Knowledge of Analytics in Healthcare (14-16%)
Domain 2 – Business Needs Assessment (11-15%)
Domain 3 – Data Acquisition (14-18%)
Domain 4 – Data Analysis (22-25%)
Domain 5 – Data Interpretation and Reporting (18-22%)
Domain 6 – Data Governance (8-10%)

My Concerns !!!!
It “appears”, that the study materials from AHMA will not be updated to reflect the updated test. Currently, AHIMA has these books for purchase in their e-store.
CHDA Exam Preparation, Second Edition by Susan White, PhD, RHIA, CHDA; the book was last updated and published in 2018.
A Practical Approach to Analyzing Healthcare Data, Fourth Edition by Susan White, PhD, RHIA, CHDA; the book was last updated and published March 2021.
Other books and materials may be available; these are the materials I find at this time at AHIMA.
One take-away on the study materials ….
Without a current single source for study materials, one will need to research materials independently to prepare for the exam. Example: articles (AHIMA Journal); publications from Data Analytic organizations; Federal government sources; independently published authors such as those on Udemy and Coursera.
