Coding COVID-19... CDC issues new code & guidelines for coding COVID-19 conditions.

Timeline is critical to selecting the correct code... reporting and reimbursement affected.
The CDC has updated several documents affecting the coding of COVID-19. Guidelines are specific to dates of service (DOS) provided prior to April 1, 2020 and “on and after April 1, 2020”.
ICD-10-CM Official Coding and Reporting Guidelines effective for (DOS) on and after April 1, 2020. The updates specifically address:
Chapter 1: Certain Infectious and Parasitic Diseases (A00-B99); g. Coronavirus Infections; 1) COVID-19 Infections (Infections due to SARS-CoV-2):
a) Code only confirmed cases
b) Sequencing of codes
c) Acute respiratory illness due to COVID-19
d) Exposure to COVID-19
e) Screening for COVID-19
f) Signs and symptoms without definitive diagnosis of COVID-19
g) Asymptomatic individuals who test positive for COVID-19
Also updates for Chapter 15: Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Puerperium (O00-O9A)

CDC guidelines for coding encounters related to COVID-19 Coronavirus Outbreak. Note the DOS February 20, 2020 – March 31, 2020. This is prior to the guidelines currently in place for DOS on and after April 1, 2020.
New ICD-10-CM code for the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), dated: April 1, 2020
Effective: March 18, 2020
Consistent with the WHO Family of International Classifications (WHOFIC) Network Classification and Statistics Advisory Committee (CSAC), the CDC created a new code for COVID-19—U07.1
