Credential As You Go – increasing skills and knowledge for 21st Century

Continuous Learning is a necessity in our rapidly advancing world …

certificates, industry specific certifications, licenses, badges, and microcredentials have been created to fill this need.

To support the growing need for knowledge workers and skilled labor in the 21st Century, Credential As You Go has been created. The initiative is focused on creating a “nationally recognized, incremental credentialing system to facilitate the advancement and upskilling for individuals across the entire ecosystem.”

Individuals acquire valuable skills and knowledge through life and work experience; the desire is to recognize these skills and validate them through continuous learning and credentials. The endeavor from Credential As You Go is on increasing the workforce preparedness through offering an individual credentials … including degrees, certificates, industry certifications, licenses, badges, and microcredentials.

💡 Value of Incremental Credentials ---

Credential As You Go centers on a commitment to use “incremental credentials” to increase postsecondary educational accessibility, attainment, and employment opportunities for all learners.

It is refreshing to see the spotlight on technology and data …

“interoperable” certainly gets the attention of anyone working in healthcare.

These credentials – and others – document an individual’s learning, and are awarded by many types of providers, including community and technical colleges, four-year colleges and universities, third-party organizations, employers, and the military and state licensing boards.

I personally see great value in the “progressive stackable credentials”; these credentials follow a linear path where a student earns a short-term credential (e.g., certificate) and continues their education by pursuing a higher-level credential (e.g., associate’s and/or bachelor’s degree). Many Health Information Professionals have taken this career path to attain certifications after completing community college degrees. One might say “we have been following this path for years in healthcare” … yes, true, but now the workforce recognizes the value that we bring and is acknowledging the value with $$$$.

In addition, the credentials are “ready when you are” --- ready to take you to a new level in your career.

💡 Where to start ---

Am proud to share that AHIMA (The American Health Information Management Association) has recently published 6 microcredentials for Health Information Professionals: Coding, CDI, Risk Auditing & Patient Matching. Complete information with links to the webpage is below.

The Credential As You Go model includes 3 phases; 2022-2023 is now the third phase supported with a grant from Walmart. The work will continue as noted here in the announcement by Credential As You Go:

“The Credential As You Go initiative includes many components that will be needed to create a nationally recognized incremental credentialing system: a national campaign to build understanding and support, research to build the evidence for the new system, training and technical assistance, equity and inclusion, policy changes, trust in the quality of incremental credentials, and building interconnections with related initiatives.”

💡💡 Look forward to more providers sharing their education pathways and individuals adding to their skill sets.
