Modern Healthcare Must Include Nurses as STEM

In today’s rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, hospitals and healthcare systems face unprecedented challenges -- Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity threats, and the overall advancement of technology. The need for innovative solutions throughout healthcare is of upmost importance. Yet, amidst these challenges, there lies a significant opportunity - one that hinges on embracing the modern nursing profession.

Where we are today….

>> ⌛ Trying to move beyond the view that … Nurses are merely “caregivers” -- - answering the patient’s light, passing out medications and emptying the bedpans.

>>⌛ Lack of seeing Nurses and the Nursing Profession as a leader or, some might say “the leader” in the scope of healthcare delivery.

The image of Nurses as a “caregiver” does not reflect the demands of Nurses

in the Modern era where technology, job responsibilities and acute care demand an Advanced-thinking Professional.

Where we must deliver … starting today ….

>>> 🕰️ Classify Nursing as a STEM-designated profession -- - this means the Federal government must classify Nursing as a >> Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics Profession. This would “increase funding to the nursing profession and enhance the diversity of employment opportunities for nurses in industry and business.”

>>> 🕰️ Modernize the reimbursement structure for nursing services. This is the mission of The Commission for Nurse Reimbursement; they are working with Congressional leaders and CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) to create a means for identifying and billing for Nurses Services. This entails a CPT code or other code structures (DRG) for inpatient services.

You may be asking how can Nursing be a STEM profession?

Did you know that the Nursing curriculum includes these areas of study:

Biology

Microbiology

Anatomy

Physiology

Pharmacology

Social/behavior sciences (sociology)

Developmental psychology

Psychology

Chemistry

Physics

Nursing education includes all of these domains. And, our work as Nurses encompasses thinking based on knowledge of these domains. Not only are the technical skills important but a Nurse must also possess Communication skills, make Clinical Judgement decisions and …. Recognize and respond to the importance of cultural needs.

ᯓ★

We are moving forward to achieve the goals for Nurses in the short-term and the future of Nursing.

Give all you can give.

Let’s share together.
